Smoking in the Early Days
Smoking and the use of Tobacco has been around for a long time. When the pilgrims landed in USA, they successfully began farming tobacco. John Rolfe in Jamestown, Virginia back in 1609 called his crop of tobacco “brown gold”. In earlier days it was hip, if you were a smoker. The popularity of tobacco increased in the 17th and 18th centuries. Until the late 1800s the tobacco excise tax accounted for 33% of the revenue that the United States Government collected.
